Description

In Internet of Things (IoT) applications, wireless connectivity is a crucial key factor, particularly those that need to be in transition, or where wired communication is not effective or practicable. For short-range wireless connectivity, various wireless standards whose operating frequency range 2.4GHz or 5GHz such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, and Wi-Fi are used with high data rates. For long-range, wireless standards with 868MHz (in Europe) such as LoRa and Sigfox are used frequently with lower data rate. For top-notch connectivity of Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) standard, the 900MHz frequency is generally used by the most of the vendors. NB-IoT is a new fast-growing wireless technology which addresses the Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) requirement for IoT and it is standardized by 3GPP in 2016. It has been classified as a 5G technology and leading LPWAN technology to enable a wide range of Industrial IoT devices. Design of Radio Frequency subsystem based on the wireless standards demands specialist skills or production ready wireless module or reference design that comes with protocol stacks and solved hardware issues. Among the challenges that must be dealt with, selecting and integrating a suitable antenna has a significant impact on the RF-subsystem and consequently affects the system performance in terms of communication range, overall power consumption, and battery life.

The radiation quality strongly not only depends on the antenna geometry but also depends on immediate surroundings. The IoT product itself and even the user of the product can strongly affect the resulting radiation pattern and other characteristics of the antenna. On the other hand, a suitable antenna should also have high efficiency and adequate bandwidth covering the desired frequency range. In order to take these effects into consideration, the whole IoT product must be included in the antenna simulations. This book deals with various antenna design concepts to meet the NB-IoT requirements and to integrate with the small IoT devices. This book also covers the antenna test and measurement techniques and case studies to understand the real time applications of antenna in NB-IoT applications.
