The book will contribute to deepening the knowledge of direct democracy in political science. The chapters will take a look into how local governments deal with the instruments of direct democracy and answer the questions of who initiates these procedures, how they affect local politics, and if they are sufficient enough. By focusing on the time factor, the book will analyze a series of popular initiatives and local referenda to sevaluate the initiation and success of these processes. Most of the studies in direct democracy focus on the Swiss case, but too few are written about the new civic culture existing at the local level in places like Germany. The German case can enlighten how presentation government and direct democracy can be combined when the conditions are well defined. Some research has been made on the history and evolution of direct democracy but with this book, there will be a deeper analysis evaluation of the praxis is needed today to analyze the transformation of local politics.
