Artificial Intelligence techniques have been used more and more in various research areas during these last two decades. Gavrilova (computer science, U. of Calgary, Canada) and Monwar (electrical and computer engineering, Carnegie Mellon U., US) introduce the biometric methodology and general directions of research conducted by members of the Biometric Technologies, Laboratory, established at the University of Calgary in 2001. They also survey applications in security systems. Among their topics are an overview of biometrics and biometrics systems, multi-modal biometric systems and information fusion, Markov chain for multi-modal biometric rank fusion, robotics, chaotic neural networks, and novel applications such as gait analysis and social networks.

Editor/Author Biographies
Marina L. Gavrilova is a Full Professor at the University of Calgary and Research Excellence Chair in Trustworthy an Explainable AI. She directs the Biometric Technologies Laboratory and has published over 300 books, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed articles in the domains of biometric security, machine learning, pattern recognition, and information fusion. Her professional excellence was recognized by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Killam Foundation, and the Order of the University of Calgary. She is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Computational Sciences (Springer), and serves on the editorial boards for the IEEE Transactions on Computational Sciences, IEEE Access, The Visual Computer, Sensors, IJPRAI and the International Journal of Biometrics.
Maruf Monwar is a PhD student of Computer Science at the University of Calgary. He received his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. in Computer Science & Technology at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and M.Sc. in Computer Science at the University of Northern BC, Canada. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and currently is on study leave. His primary research interests include biometric fusion, expression recognition and biological data processing. He is one of the recipients of the prestigious inaugural NSERC Vanier CGS Scholarship. He served as a guest editor of the International Journal of Biometrics, published by Indersciences.
