Abstract

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is transforming dentistry by enabling precise, affordable, and localized production of dental devices. Using a layer-by-layer process with materials like resins and metals, it creates prosthetics, orthodontic devices, and surgical guides, improving workflows and patient care. In rural areas, where economic and infrastructure barriers limit access to specialized dental care, 3D printing offers a revolutionary solution. By enabling on-site production of custom devices, it reduces costs, shortens treatment times, and bridges the gap between rural and urban healthcare. Successful cases in India, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia highlight its potential to empower local providers and improve accessibility. However, challenges like high startup costs, limited materials, and training requirements hinder broader adoption. Future advancements, including AI integration and improved materials, could overcome these barriers.3D printing promises equitable, high-quality dental care by decentralizing production and improving access.
