Abstract

Smart health care depends on emerging technologies like electronic health records, along with internet of things, artificial intelligence, mobile communications, cloud computing, etc. This helps to create various systems like health management systems and medical service systems. This chapter includes: (1) development of smart health care using machine learning and blockchain technology; (2) uses of machine learning and blockchain technology with smart healthcare applications; (3) impact of smart healthcare applications on human health; (4) features of smart healthcare applications; and (5) limitations.

Smart Health Care

Smart healthcare applications are defined as a stream which includes acquisition of data, computing and networking technologies, data privacy, processing of data and dissemination of data. Medical management in healthcare involves three key components:

  • 1.

The medical team includes doctors, nurses, administration, and technicians

  • 2.

    Emergency oriented services

  • 3.

Health and health related service users like patients

E-health is defined as “an emerging field in the intersection of medical informatics, public health and business, referring to health services and information delivered or enhanced through the Internet and related technologies”. As a whole this term signifies not only the development in technology, but also involves the state of mind, global thinking, improve local and regional health by using communication technology and information.

Blockchain was introduced by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009 for designing and developing cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. This technology is used in wide areas like finance, banking, education, healthcare, media, power sector, governance, logistics etc. This maintains a distributed ledger technology which removes the third party to authenticate the transaction.

The distributed digital ledger is maintained by the Block chain by using the blocks. Each block consists of

  • Data- purpose of blockchain will command the type of data

  • Hash- will identify the block and its components

  • Previous hash- communicates current block to previous block

Block chain structure includes various layers like presentation layer, consensus layer, networking layer, data layer, infrastructure layer.
