The Evolution Of Hrm In The Age Of Ai

In the grand tableau of organizational development, we witness the twilight of traditional HRM. As the amber hues of this age-old practice begin to fade, a brilliant horizon, illuminated by the shimmering lights of technology and AI, emerges. The transition of HR professionals from the confines of archaic administrative roles to the dynamic, agile, and strategic purveyors of human potential is a testament to AI's transformative touch (Yalenios & d'Armagnac, 2023). This journey, punctuated by AI's disruptive innovation (Lee et al., 2019), has catalyzed HR's evolution, propelling them from backroom operational roles to the strategic epicenter of organizations.

Delving into the annals of HRM, we find its embryonic stages firmly embedded in the industrial era (Dunn, 1990). These were times when HR's primary mandate revolved around the tangible and tactile: hiring, training, compensating, and often, firefighting. They crafted systems, ensured smooth administrative processes, managed the ebb and flow of grievances, and meticulously ensured that the company remained compliant with the legal labyrinth of labor laws. As we navigate through this historical lens, several studies have highlighted the importance of leadership (Farrukh et al., 2023), indicating how pivotal leaders were in shaping these foundational HR functions. Though indispensable, the HR professionals of yore were often seen as peripheral players in the grand organizational orchestra with limited influence.
