Abstract

Public transportation provides opportunities for mobility, access to basic services, work, and studying. It is of great benefit to those who choose to ride as well as those who have no other choice. Generally, commuters often experience waiting at a transport terminal to get information from transport controllers about transport facilities. The transport enquiry system is useful to provide bus details necessary to plan travel and save the waiting time for the user at the bus station. This chapter aims to develop a voice-based automated transport enquiry system. The need for the voice application is borne out of the desire to assist people, especially those with visual impairments, to have access to the functionality of the transport enquiry system. A test case of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) shuttle system is used. A survey is carried out to evaluate the performance of the system among users of the proposed system and the obtained response time, efficiency, and functionality metrics is presented.

Transportation System

People travel from one place to another to meet their daily primary needs. These needs could be for subsistence such as going to work, acquiring food and essential services. Another reason is for personal development such as going to school, cultural facilities, and for entertainment such visiting friends and participating or watching sporting events. Travellers usually make choices of the modes they use based on both necessity and preference.

Classification of Transportation Systems

The modes of transportation consist of private, for-hire and public. Private transportation is made up of vehicles privately owned and operated by individuals for their personal use. The common ones are bicycles and private cars. For-hire (paratransit) transportation that is provided by individuals or companies that meet the conditions of the contract for transportation and carriage of goods at some fixed or negotiable fares or rates. Some common examples of paratransit transportation modes include taxis and Ubers. The public transportation (mass or urban transit) system is available for use by everyone provided they pay the required fare. They usually operate on selected routes and sometimes follow a fixed schedule. Examples of this type of transportation include bus, light rail transit, metro, regional train and so on.
