Abstract

In a global context of digital transformation, organisations have been challenged to embrace innovation and new technology and reviewed methodological approaches to enhance their digital learning ecosystems, including a systematic review of the internal value proposition of how people learn, share, and build new knowledge. The relationship between a learning organization, digital transformation, and digital learning is intertwined, as they are all interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Digital learning allows for integrating immersive learning experiences, personalized learning paths, and data-driven insights, which can drive performance improvements and foster innovation within the organization. This chapter aims to resume the main components an organization, and could promote an assessment and apply when designing digital learning content to support a broader digital learning strategy.

1. Introduction

In a global context of digital transformation, organisations have been challenged to embrace innovation and new technology and reviewed methodological approaches to enhance their digital learning ecosystems (Leso et al., 2022), including a systematic review of the internal value proposition of how people learn, share, and build new knowledge, which are operational concepts for acting as a Learning Organisation (Senge, 2006).

The relationship between a Learning Organisation (LO), Digital Transformation (DT), and Digital Learning (DL) is intertwined, as they are all interconnected and mutually reinforcing (Helbis et al., 2021).

A Learning Organisation provides the foundation for embracing digital transformation initiatives. This, in turn, facilitates the development of a digital learning ecosystem within the organisation (Ifenthaler et al., 2020).

Digital learning plays a significant role in supporting digital transformation and the development of a learning organisation, as it encompasses using digital technologies and resources to facilitate and enhance learning experiences (Helbig et al., 2021). It may involve creating and delivering educational content through digital platforms, online courses, multimedia resources, and interactive learning materials (Alessi & Trollip, 2000). It leverages technology to provide flexible, personalised, and engaging learning opportunities.

Digital learning allows for integrating immersive learning experiences, personalised learning paths, and data-driven insights, which can drive performance improvements and foster innovation within the organisation (Helbig et al., 2021; Leso et al., 2022).

One of the core components of digital learning is digital content. They provide the necessary resources, tools, and learning experiences to adapt to digital technologies, enable access to digital skills, enhance flexibility and scalability, foster personalisation, and encourage collaboration and connectivity. They are integral components of the digital transformation journey in organisations (Seufert et al., 2016).

Digital content is any information or media created, stored, or distributed in a digital format. It may include articles, videos, images, audio files, and social media posts (Wiley D. et al., 2004).

Digital Learning Content (DLC), on the other hand, is specifically designed and developed to facilitate learning and educational experiences (Koedinger et al., 2012). It is intended to support instructional objectives, provide structured learning experiences, and enhance learners' knowledge, skills, or competencies (Majumdar, S., 2003; Seufert, S., & Meier, C., 2016).

Although digital content and digital learning content may seem similar, the latter prioritises learning objectives, instructional design principles and creating meaningful learning experiences (Jahnke, I., 2022).

According to Seufert, S., & Meier, C. (2016): “Digital transformation requires not only general skills and attitudes. These skills and attitudes must be applied and used in the specific functions and professional domains that constitute the organisation (…). Digital transformation emerges when usage enables innovation and creativity, leading to significant change – at the individual or organisational level.”

Digital transformation and digital learning contents are closely intertwined. Digital learning content plays a vital role in supporting digital transformation as an enabler in educational institutions and organisations.

As institutions adopt digital technologies and strategies to transform their processes, systems, and learning environments, DLC provides the necessary resources and tools for delivering effective and engaging online education that is flexible and scalable (Egloffstein, M., and Ifenthaler, D. (2016). DLC facilitates the transition from traditional classroom-based learning to digital and online learning experiences, which can be personalised and adaptive to cater to individual learners' needs and preferences (Ifenthaler et al., 2020).
