Abstract

This chapter examines the evolution of propaganda and its transition into the digital landscape, focusing on its emergence and detection. It begins with a brief historical overview of propaganda before shifting to the digital era, which is characterized by interactivity, anonymity, and virtuality. The chapter argues that the convergence of technological tools, social media platforms, and artificial intelligence has significantly expanded the reach and complexity of propaganda techniques. This has led to the rise of computational propaganda, which leverages algorithms and automation to manipulate public opinion and disseminate misinformation on a large scale. A key focus is the review of current detection techniques, including machine learning frameworks designed to identify automated accounts and coordinated activities. Through a literature review and case studies, the chapter evaluates the effectiveness of current computational tools in detecting online propaganda. It also highlights the need for further research to address existing gaps and improve detection methods.
