Abstract

There has been a slow uptake of distance education over a period of time. However, this has gradually changed to online education as many institutions adopted digitalisation. COVID-19 brought about forced digitalisation of education with a number of challenges that came to the fore. The study utilised a review of peer reviewed journal articles in Google Scholar and Web of Science databases. The finding shows that digital equity, digital diversity, access to the internet and electricity, academic capitalism, and limitations of testing and examination digital systems were the top emerging themes. Access, equality, and equity in education were still a challenge under face-to-face platforms, but online education has worsened the challenges even more. The integrity in examination and credibility of qualifications attained through such a system can be brought into question if examination monitoring and invigilation are not adequately addressed. Attendance of students to these platforms as logging on, is not an indicator of attendance, presence and active learning raises challenges.

2. The Background

Digital technologies have drastically changed the educational scene recently, especially in higher education. A potent instrument for boosting learning experiences and extending educational access is digitalised teaching, which includes online courses, virtual classrooms, and interactive learning platforms. The educational industry is embracing digitisation more and more, but it is important to consider how this change will affect the values of access, equality, and diversity. While there are many advantages to digitalised teaching, it is worth to investigating the difficulties and possibilities it brings for advancing diversity, equality, and fair access in higher education. By examining the numerous effects of digitalised teaching on these critical facets of educational equity and digital equity, this research seeks to address this gap. Digital education is said to improve access, learning, and cooperation, according to the education technology (Edtech) community (Susanto, Muafiah, Desrani, Ritonga, & Hakim, 2022). As higher education systems were suddenly forced to move instruction online, the COVID-19 pandemic put these assertions to the test like never before. Since it was first presented and used in earlier decades, e-learning is an evolutionary idea rather than a revolutionary one (Hasan et al., 2023). By examining comprehensive perspectives on the ongoing online teaching activities during the lockdown, the current research work contributes to the field of education. Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on human life. Given the effects of this global health pandemic, companies are currently adapting their plans to the conditions of the epidemic by employing the digitalisation of processes and tasks as well as cutting-edge management techniques. The covid-19 pandemic outbreak had a detrimental effect on education as well.
