Abstract

Recently, augmented reality (AR) has gained a lot of popularity. The fundamental tenet of augmented reality is to effectively facilitate interactive communication between people and computers. With the aid of specific tools, a person in the real world can enter the electronically produced reality. These days, this technology is included in every mobile filter we use, including those seen in Pokémon Go and the Instagram and Snapchat apps. Wearable versions of numerous miniature augmented reality models have been created. Numerous industries have been investigated using AR technology, including those in the realms of medicine, education, business, architecture, commerce, tourism, navigation, translation, the visual arts, fitness, flying training, the military, industrial manufacturing, etc. The roots of AR in Industry 4.0 are deepening day by day. The immense potential of AR can be utilized in an infinite number of ways to fulfill the objectives of Industry 4.0. This chapter shows the impact of AR in our society.

Introduction

In this highly competitive world of technology, immersive technologies like Augmented realities, Virtual realities, and mixed realities have brought up major changes and serve as a key to shaping the future of mankind. Due to VR and AR, we can anticipate significant changes in how we work, are amused, and communicate within the next five to ten years. The direction in which our society is moving will be dramatically altered by these technologies. These technologies are called immersive technologies as they tend to immerse our minds into another reality often created virtually. These technologies take us to a separate dimension that is created virtually. They may put on a headset and feel as though they are at a soccer stadium thousands of kilometers away when they are simply sitting on a couch at home. They may slip on a set of cutting-edge glasses and have a friend who lives on another continent appear as a fully realistic holographic avatar and converse with them. From their house, they might attend a live performance by one of their favorite artists. These technologies tend to simulate users' senses through the combinations of various hardware. The potential of AR, VR, and MR has been utilized effectively in various sectors from manufacturing to medicines. As these technologies serve as a bridge to the future many tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook(meta) have been interested in these fields and invested a lot. In 2020, the global augmented reality market was estimated to be 4.16 billion USD and it was predicted to reach up to 97.76 billion USD in a period between 2021-2028. Everyday innovations have been welcomed to increase the efficiency of the process. The environment in AR is not completely synthetic as in VR but is a combination of real-world and digital world entities. The basic purpose of AR is to improve the user experience and to provide some additional digital information over real-world components.

Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the biggest growing technologies right now and is ever expanding. AR superimposes digital information like text, images, video or audio, etc.. over a real-world object. It does not simply display those data over real-world entities but makes those virtual components a part of the natural environment using immersion. More simply it is the overlaying of virtual components on the objects of the real world.AR seems to be a tool that helps mankind to excel in various fields. It has spread its wings in almost all possible fields following the Industrial Revolution4.0. AR increases the production process efficiency, reduces the occurrence of errors, digitalizes information, and improves the overall performance of an industry. AR find its applications in entertainment military and tourism to medicines. AR makes itself an important key to the future and will change everyone's life with no doubt. The purpose of AR is to take mankind next level with the help of such advanced technology. Nowadays all the filters that we use on mobiles such as Snapchat filters, Instagram filters, and a lot more have incorporated this technology. Games such as Pokémon Go, Ingres, Zombie Run, etc have used this technology. Many Miniature AR models have been developed as wearables such as Smart AR glasses, and Head Mounted Tablet(HMT). Even smartphones these days can generate AR. Many Tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Facebook, Google, Niantic, etc.. have been interested in this field and have invested a lot in this field as it is the future of technologies. A private survey has calculated that the value of AR in the global markets will reach up to 78.4 Billion dollars by 2025 in the Medical field alone. This technology is extensively being used in the commerce field. In 2018 Apple announced that iPhones and pads with iOS 12 will support AR files, Shopify announced AR quick look integration, and Twinkl released a free AR classroom application. Cosmetic companies like L’Oréal, Sephora, Tilbury, etc have also utilized AR. Figure 1 shows the gameplay view of the Pokémon Go game.
