This chapter presents a secondary analysis of five case studies to explore leadership dynamics in the context of the “new normal.” This analysis illuminates the essential role of transformational leadership in addressing emergent challenges. The chapter focuses on four primary facets: emotional intelligence; conflict management; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and fostering an environment of learning and development. Results reveal that successful leaders can navigate conflict effectively and encourage emotional intelligence; enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion; and promote an ecosystem for learning and development within their teams. Further, findings demonstrate that cultivating transformational leadership styles can significantly enhance these competencies. As such, transformational leadership emerges as a crucial strategy for organizations aiming to succeed in the new normal. The chapter concludes with recommendations for leaders and organizations based on the insights gleaned from the case studies.
TopIntroduction
In the present epoch of profound global transformation, unanticipated crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine War, have necessitated prompt and dynamic alterations in how organizations comprehend and assume leadership roles in organizations across the globe (Benson, 2022; Gonzales, 2023). These global predicaments have driven organizations to consider the characteristics of successful leadership, initiating a shift from conventional leadership methodologies towards tactics that are resilient, versatile, and compassionate (Smith, 2022).
In today's challenging times, transformational leadership has become a powerful approach to motivating team members toward a shared vision (Smith, 2022). This research delves into the intricacies of transformational leadership in the context of global crises and their resulting shifts. By analyzing case studies from various organizational settings, this study provides insights into how transformational leadership can effectively navigate conflicts, promote emotional intelligence, and cultivate a culture of learning and development.
Emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical component of transformational leadership. The ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions and those of others have been proven to enhance leadership efficacy (Kline, 2022). Sabie et al.'s (2020) study highlight the correlation between EI and employee performance. This research builds on that discourse by examining how transformational leaders utilize EI to adapt to the “new normal.”
As part of a study on leadership in global crises, it is important to navigate conflicts to promote growth and development (Tin & Wisankosol, 2018; Wu & Preudhikulpradab, 2020). This is especially crucial in the current climate, where the 'new normal' has brought about unique challenges that can exacerbate conflicts. Fortunately, transformational leadership principles offer a framework to address these conflicts effectively. Through promoting emotional intelligence, individuals can adapt to these new circumstances and foster a culture of learning and development (Tin & Wisankosol, 2018).
In addition to managing conflicts, transformational leaders recognize the importance of fostering workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). A diverse, inclusive work environment fosters innovation and enhances productivity (Tin & Wisankosol, 2018; Wu & Preudhikulpradab, 2020). As this research has shown, integrating DEI principles into leadership practices is essential to navigating the 'new normal' (Wu & Preudhikulpradab, 2020).
