Abstract

This chapter presents a grid connected wind energy conversion system based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator. A direct drive topology where the generator is directly coupled to the turbine shaft without using a gearbox is chosen. Modeling of the operating mechanism components is studied. The proposed control strategy is left on three main axes: the maximization of the power extracted from the wind, the control of the converter on the generator side, and the control of the converter on the grid side. Using Matlab/Simulink environment, the extracted simulation results consolidate the reliability of the developed model and the good performance of the proposed control strategy.
