Abstract

MTSS and Social emotional learning are not just a group of tiers and layers. This can be compared to a cake. Within MTSS there are certain issues that have to be discussed that are layered within the process of helping a child. The Base (Tier 1): Starts with high-quality instruction for all, with SEL baked in. This creates a positive learning environment where students feel valued and can develop crucial social-emotional skills. Adding Flavor (Tier 2): Involves early detection of students needing extra help. Targeted interventions address specific needs, like executive functioning, early childhood development, and ADHD. The Finishing Touch (Tier 3): Provides highly individualized support, like one-on-one instruction or therapy. Strong collaboration between educators, families, and specialists is key. Holistic Approach: MTSS weaves SEL throughout all tiers, recognizes the impact of trauma, and emphasizes family engagement. It's about nourishing the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally.
