Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted educational institutions globally. The disruption impacted delivery and teacher wellness—a drastic shift from traditional teaching to hybrid and online models without adequate teacher preparation and training. Schools implemented different platforms to support the paradigm shift. These shifts caused by COVID-19 have lasting positive and negative impacts on educators, educator preparation programs, P-12 students, and the overall wellness of teachers and students. This chapter addresses the pedagogical shifts and impact of educator wellness (physically, mentally, and emotionally) caused by the pandemic. The study's findings indicate that the adjustments made by teachers and students will improve communication, collaboration, and teaching with technology skills. The shift to remote learning further strengthened the relationships between teachers and families. Finally, the chapter addresses the importance of teacher wellness and self-care.

Covid-19 Pandemic

COVID-19 has irrevocably altered the teaching and learning landscape across the world. In March 2020, most schools and essential businesses across the world closed their doors due to a state of emergency declared because of the novel Corona Virus. COVID-19 pandemic made technology integration a non-negotiable component of 21st century teaching and learning. According to Barry and Kanematsu, (2020), SARS COV2 is a highly contagious respiratory illness that affects the human body. To slow the spread of the virus, stay at home orders were put in place for the general population. With schools closed, educators pivot to find new ways to educate learners. Instructors and parents worked from home, managing their children’s schoolwork online with their own work requirements and deadlines. The drastic change caused by the pandemic presented many challenges for educators, parents, and students. With teaching and learning happening in online setting, teachers made pedagogical decisions regarding teaching styles and teaching tools that greatly impact students’ learning outcomes, (Lepp et.al., 2021). According to Lepp et. al., (2021), the key decision making was how to support teachers in online settings. The shift to online learning changed the role of teachers from the traditional classroom management structure to an online classroom management structure (Barron et al., 2021). According to Barry & Kanematsu (2020), one crucial aspect for teachers was finding a reliable instructional delivery platform.
