Privacy and Security Concerns in the Metaverse

Introduction

The journal article “Metaverse: Security and Privacy Issues” was published by Roberto Di Pietro and Stefano Crest in 2021. Both authors focus on today's essential issues regarding privacy and security related to almost all technology, known as metaverse, that people use or are involved in daily life, whether it relates to working life or daily activities. Myriads of journal articles and research papers regarding privacy and security on metaverse prove that privacy and security is not a new topic that has surfaced recently until today. This is because privacy and security have already been brought up and discussed a long time ago, almost more than two and a half centuries ago, which means that this topic area is not something that people can solve quickly or in a short amount of time since many authors nowadays still talk or do research regarding privacy and security on metaverse (Anshari et al., 2022). For example, some authors focused on improving what was achieved in the past few years: privacy and security that have already been strengthened to avoid any bad incident. This might happen without anyone's knowledge or in the future when people are already prepared for the possible bad outcome. However, some authors believe that privacy and security are not something that can be taken lightly even though everyday people make progress and improve.

Although there are many articles or books regarding this topic, Roberto and Stefano contributed to the analysis of the basis of a metaverse which led them to raise the issues of privacy and security in their research. As a result, it helps them to conclude their study by contributing a logical implication or suggestion of the metaverse in the future. Also, they have explored the potential research that privacy and security can do in the future that can lead other authors or researchers to find a new direction or topic that has not been discussed yet in the past. In this era of globalization, the increase of metaverse’s privacy and security issues such as stolen personal information or security breach of the database becomes more familiar to people nowadays. Also, it is almost impossible to keep up with the new technology that keeps on increasing and improving, leading to more data or information needing to be protected and secure. Therefore, while new technology is introduced and keeps on updating every year, people also need to keep up to handle their privacy and security to avoid any incident that might occur in the future.
