Abstract

Professional women in academia may find navigating the complexities of faculty promotion and tenure daunting. This chapter intends to inspire and enlighten the population of interest by offering knowledge and strategies that might help to more successfully negotiate this process. While most academic departments have specific guiding principles and set goals, there are times when some mentoring will be needed. Therefore, identifying experienced mentors who care about the promotion and success of women faculty and scholars can be a great asset. Ideal mentors are those who have already climbed the ranks of academia, overcoming similar experiences to achieve career success. This chapter has important implications for supporting the professional development of women in academia. The author draws from relevant empirical research and experiential knowledge in proposing recommendations for support.
