The networked human moves across the city while consuming and reproducing representations of the places it encounters. This paper investigates how human engagement with the smartphone has created a shift in perception and embodiment that affects the relationship between the moving body and the city through rituals performed in everyday life. The smartphone becomes a pivotal point between the physical and virtual worlds, allowing the user to access and interfere with physical and virtual layers of space, continually transforming how the public understands the city. This paper uses media studies theory to read how the smartphone operates as an always-available extension of the body that functions as a screen, a camera, a map, and a small computer. In a new, data-enhanced world that has emerged, storytelling and the circulation of representations of the surrounding space affect the experience of the city. This paper explores how informational flows create new topologies, new embodied experiences, and new futures for cities.

Existing buildings are seen as a potential field where effective carbon-saving and energy-efficiency strategies can be applied. Their lifetime and performance can be increased by implementing different retrofit measures. The retrofit processes remain a complex task that necessitates long-term planning and costly operations and requires a consensus of their stakeholders to identify an ultimate solution from many alternatives. This paper demonstrates a simulation-based exploratory approach, allowing a broader consideration of alternative retrofit solutions to increase non-technical and technical stakeholders’ involvement over design decisions. A hypothetical office building was selected, and a list of retrofit parameters and their combinations focusing on multiple objectives was determined, modeled, simulated, and visualized. Three different decision-making approaches are presented and discussed over the case study results. The study suggests that giving a voice to all stakeholders in decision-making processes might lead to achieving more robust retrofit solutions.

The early architectural design involves the most salient decisions. However, because of the large amount of variance, the decision-making is highly arduous. This article presents a methodology to enable the most effective design variables to be selected within the most effective value range by presenting a method that allows the measurement of output uncertainty depending on the impact of design decisions on outputs. The methodology was tested with different building functions and climate regions using two-phase sensitivity analysis. The values of design variables were generated with quasi-random sampling. They were sorted with factor prioritization. Ineffective variables were eliminated with factor fixing. Advanced global sensitivity analyses were performed for the total effect. Factor mapping was applied with the output weighting. The results were presented with Parallel Coordinate Plot (PCP). The designers can make selections from alternatives with PCP. Finally, the study demonstrated how climate and building functions should be considered for building performance.

Reciprocal Frame (RF) is a three-dimensional grillage structure that consists of mutually supported elements. In RF, whatever the composition that is built, the geometry should always have two members that are connected at a time. Moreover, at least three members should be connected to create a grid, but there is no limit for the maximum. In the research that has been done until today, the geometry of RF, form-finding issues, connections, structural behavior, fabrication methods were studied, but there is very limited number of studies about kinetic RF. In this study RF structures for single loop 3-, 4-, and 5-nexor configurations are analyzed in terms of their motion capabilities. The kinematic diagrams are drawn and their mobilities are calculated. Zero, single, and multi Degrees of Freedom (DoF) configurations are obtained. It has been found that the configurations with revolute joint series get minimum value and also it is not necessary to use as many joints as possible or joints with as many DoF as possible in the configuration to get maximum mobility value.

This article reports results of a study on reducing commute times in Istanbul, Turkey with special reference to university students. In order to reduce commute times in cities with high population density, this study proposes a mutual home exchange model for university students. The proposed model searches for suitable matches that can reduce commute times for residents in the case that they want to exchange their houses. A new matching algorithm has been designed in the context of this study. Agent-based approach has been preferred to define and solve home exchange problem and each home location is considered as an agent. Furthermore, two main one-sided matching algorithms, which are Irving’s Stable Roommate matching algorithm and Gale’s Top Trading Cycles matching algorithm, have been implemented for the home exchange problem. The proposed algorithm and two matching algorithms have been applied on a virtual data. The results of home exchange matching algorithms are presented.
