The Big Data and Data Analytics is a brand new paradigm, for the integration of Internet Technology in the human and machine context. For the first time in the history of the human mankind we are able to transforming raw data that are massively produced by humans and machines in to knowledge and wisdom capable of supporting smart decision making, innovative services, new business models, innovation, and entrepreneurship. For the Web Science research, this is a new methodological and technological spectrum of advanced methods, frameworks and functionalities never experienced in the past. At the same moment communities out of web science need to realize the potential of this new paradigm with the support of new sound business models and a critical shift in the perception of decision making. In this short visioning article, the authors are analyzing the main aspects of Big Data and Data Analytics Research and they provide their own metaphor for the next years. A number of research directions are outlined as well as a new roadmap towards the evolution of Big Data to Smart Decisions and Cognitive Computing. The authors do hope that the readers would like to react and to propose their own value propositions for the domain initiating a scientific dialogue beyond self-fulfilled expectations.

Compartmental models have been used to model information diffusion on social media. However, there have been few studies on modelling positive and negative public opinions using compartmental models. This study aimed for using sentiment analysis and compartmental model to model the propagation of positive and negative opinions on microblogging big media. The authors studied the news propagation of seven popular social topics on China's Sina Weibo microblogging platform. Natural language processing and sentiment analysis were used to identify public opinions from microblogging big data. Then two existing (SIZ and SEIZ) models and a newly developed (SE2IZ) model were implemented to model the news propagation and evaluate the trends of public opinions on selected social topics. Simulation study was used to check model fitting performance. The results show that the new SE2IZ model has a better model fitting performance than existing models. This study sheds some new light on using social media for public opinion estimation and prediction.

Recently, a rapid growth in the population in urban regions demands the provision of services and infrastructure. These needs can be come up wit the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as sensors, actuators, smartphones and smart systems. This leans to building Smart City towards the next generation Super City planning. However, as thousands of IoT devices are interconnecting and communicating with each other over the Internet to establish smart systems, a huge amount of data, termed as Big Data, is being generated. It is a challenging task to integrate IoT services and to process Big Data in an efficient way when aimed at decision making for future Super City. Therefore, to meet such requirements, this paper presents an IoT-based system for next generation Super City planning using Big Data Analytics. Authors have proposed a complete system that includes various types of IoT-based smart systems like smart home, vehicular networking, weather and water system, smart parking, and surveillance objects, etc., for dada generation. An architecture is proposed that includes four tiers/layers i.e., 1) Bottom Tier-1, 2) Intermediate Tier-1, 3) Intermediate Tier 2, and 4) Top Tier that handle data generation and collections, communication, data administration and processing, and data interpretation, respectively. The system implementation model is presented from the generation and collection of data to the decision making. The proposed system is implemented using Hadoop ecosystem with MapReduce programming. The throughput and processing time results show that the proposed Super City planning system is more efficient and scalable.

Search engines and social networks are two entirely different data sources that can provide valuable information about Influenza. While search engine hosts can deliver popular queries (or terms) used for searching the Influenza related information, the social networks contain useful links of information sources that people have found valuable. The authors hypothesize that such data sources can provide vital first-hand information. In this article, they have proposed a methodology for detecting the information sources from social networks, particularly Twitter. The data filtering and source finding tasks are posed as classification tasks. Search engine queries are used for extracting related dataset. Results have shown that propose approach can be beneficial for extracting useful information regarding side effects, medications and to track geographical location of epidemics affected area.

Twitter is one of the most popular microblog service providers, in this microblogging platform users use hashtags to categorize their tweets and to join communities around particular topics. However, the percentage of messages incorporating hashtags is small and the hashtags usage is very heterogeneous as users may spend a lot of time searching the appropriate hashtags for their messages. In this paper, the authors present an approach for hashtag recommendations in microblogging platforms by leveraging semantic features. Moreover, they conduct a detailed study on how the semantic-based model influences the final recommended hashtags using different ranking strategies. Also, users are interested by fresh and specific hashtags due to the rapid growth of microblogs, thus, the authors propose a time popularity ranking strategy. Furthermore, they study the combination of these ranking strategies. The experiment results conducted on a large dataset; show that their approach improves respectively lexical and semantic based recommendation by more than 11% and 7% on recommending 5 hashtags.

The goal of linked data instance matching is to detect all instances that co-refer to the same objects in two linked data repositories, the source and the target. Since the amount of linked data is rapidly growing, it is important to automate this task. However, the difference between the schemata of source and target repositories remains a challenging barrier. This barrier reduces the portability, accuracy, and scalability of many proposed approaches. The authors present automatic schema-independent interlinking (ASL), which is a schema-independent system that performs instance matching on repositories with different schemata, without prior knowledge about the schemata. The key improvements of ASL compared to previous systems are the detection of useful attribute pairs for comparing instances, an attribute-driven token-based blocking scheme, and an effective modification of existing string similarities. To verify the performance of ASL, the authors conducted experiments on a large dataset containing 246 subsets with different schemata. The results show that ASL obtains high accuracy and significantly improves the quality of discovered coreferences against recently proposed complex systems.

When dealing with a specific patient case, physicians are often interested in retrieving a personalized version of a clinical guideline, that is a version tailored to their use needs. In a patient-centric scenario, empowered patients make up another class of users interested in retrieving personalized care plans from a guideline repository. In their previous work, the authors proposed techniques to efficiently provide ontology-based personalized access to very large collections of multi-version clinical guidelines. In this paper, they address the problem of also dealing with a multi-version ontology used to support personalized access to clinical guidelines. The authors' approach allows the semantic indexing of guideline contents with respect to multi-version ontology classes and exploits the IS-A relationship among such classes for granting personalized access. Efficiency is ensured by a newly introduced annotation scheme for guidelines and solutions to cope with the evolution of ontology structure. The tests performed on a prototype implementation confirm the goodness of the approach.

Producing the Linked Open Data (LOD) is getting potential to publish high-quality interlinked data. Publishing such data facilitates intelligent searching from the Web of data. In the context of scientific publications, data about millions of scientific documents published by hundreds and thousands of publishers is in silence as it is not published as open data and ultimately is not linked to other datasets. In this paper the authors present SPedia: a semantically enriched knowledge base of data about scientific documents. SPedia knowledge base provides information on more than nine million scientific documents, consisting of more than three hundred million RDF triples. These extracted datasets, allow users to put sophisticated queries by employing semantic Web techniques instead of relying on keyword-based searches. This paper also shows the quality of extracted data by performing sample queries through SPedia SPARQL Endpoint and analyzing results. Finally, the authors describe that how SPedia can serve as central hub for the cloud of LOD of scientific publications.

Semantic Web technologies act as an interoperability glue among different formats, protocols and platforms, providing a uniform vision of heterogeneous devices and services in the Internet of Things (IoT). Semantic Web technologies can be applied to a broad range of application contexts (i.e., industrial automation, automotive, health care, defense, finance, smart cities) involving heterogeneous actors (i.e., end users, communities, public authorities, enterprises). Smart-M3 is a semantic publish-subscribe software architecture conceived to merge the Semantic Web and the IoT domains. It is based on a core component (SIB, Semantic Information Broker) where data is stored as RDF graphs, and software agents using SPARQL to update, retrieve and subscribe to changes in the data store. This article describes a OSGi SIB implementation extended with a new persistent SPARQL update primitive. The OSGi SIB performance has been evaluated and compared with the reference C implementation. Eventually, a first porting on Android is presented.
