Description

In general, distance education can be classified as either synchronous or asynchronous. In asynchronous learning, learners can access the learning materials, which are prepared by the instructor or a distance education team, anywhere anytime. Learners can contact with the instructor and other learners using asynchronous communication tools like e-mail messages, online discussion boards, and more. It is a flexible learning approach based on the self-study of the learner. Lots of people prefer asynchronous learning which allows them to study anytime, because of their work, family and other responsibilities which prevents them to reserve certain time periods for online courses. Asynchronous learning allows learners to study anywhere anytime by reaching the learning materials in an online platform, and to contact with the instructor and other learners mostly by an integrated messaging tool.

There are strengths and weaknesses of both synchronous and asynchronous applications. For instance, social interaction and instant feedback can be considered as the strengths of synchronous learning, on the other hand, time flexibility and self-study can be considered as the strengths of asynchronous learning. A distance education system, whether it is synchronous or asynchronous, should be planned according to the various aspects of distance education. Such aspects of distance education can be categorized as learner, instructor, technology, content, support services, strategy, communication and evaluation.

This book explores managing and creating online courses for both types of learning, synchronous and asynchronous, through up to date research and the latest developments in the field. The chapters will explore the best practices in course design intended for student accessibility and success no matter the environment. This book is a guide for online course designers and institutions that facilitate online learning in distance education systems. Additionally, this book intends to be a source for educators and researchers, instructional designers, trainers, educational administrators, and anyone who is interested in online learning environments.
