IntroductionThe amount of data generated, captured, copied, and consumed worldwide is growing rapidly due to the increased use of the internet, mobile phone and social media. Organizations are adopting a data-driven approach to identify new business opportunities, serve customers better, increase sales, improve operations efficiency, and more. In today's modern corporate environment, business intelligence and analytics have emerged as an indispensable tool for improving decision-making, facilitating the execution of major initiatives, and guiding the overall company strategies. The role of analytics in solving business problems has increased manifold in recent years. Researchers, academics, and practitioners are paying more attention because of the increasing benefits of business analytics.
The purpose of this special issue is to present the emerging trends, practices, and developments in the field of Business Intelligence and Analytics. This special issue aims to present the current research progress on applications, approaches and challenges faced by both academia and industry in building data-driven organization. We welcome original research papers, review papers, and case studies for this special issue. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under review elsewhere.

IntroductionThe Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is the fourth major industrial era since the initial Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. It is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres, collectively referred to as cyber-physical systems. It is marked by emerging technology breakthroughs in a number of fields, including robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, quantum computing, biotechnology, the Internet of Things, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), decentralized consensus, fifth-generation wireless technologies (5G), additive manufacturing/3D printing and fully autonomous vehicles.
With such advances in diverse industries, Business Intelligence (BI) and respective systems came into play to have a major role supporting decision makers at all levels of organizations. Business intelligence solutions combine operational data with analytical tools to present complex and competitive information to planners and decision makers. The objective is to improve the timeliness and quality of inputs to the decision process. Business Intelligence is used to understand the capabilities available in the firm; the state of the art, trends, and future directions in the markets, the technologies, and the regulatory environment in which the firm competes; and the actions of competitors and the implications of these actions.
ObjectiveThe fourth industrial revolution’s global and societal model has even disrupted how businesses are to be providing and delivering business solutions per se. Topical coverage of particular interest and contributions is expected to highlight novelty in such area of research of relevance to BI and the 4IR at large.
