What is Horizontal Scalability

Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Third Edition
When data is expected to grow at very high rate and rather than extending the capacity of existing hardware resources (addition of RAM, Hard Disk etc.), if a new hardware/ node (new commodity hardware) is added to accommodate that growth, it is called as horizontal scalability.
