This edited volume will highlight works that examine adult learners’ motivation and momentum in online education. We aim to provide examples of strategies, tools, and practices educators and educational institutions use to encourage and support adult learners’ motivation and momentum across a variety of online educational programs (e.g., micro-credentials, certificates, undergraduate through doctoral programs, lifelong learning applications). This edited volume will demonstrate a variety of strategies, tools, and practices that can be adapted to support the needs of diverse adult learners across a range of educational contexts. The outline below provides examples of the topics that may be included.


Online education has created an ever-expanding number of programs. Adult online learners are diverse and have varied talents, challenges, and motivations. This edited volume will serve to highlight unique and varied approaches to adult learners’ motivation and momentum in online education. This work will appeal to individuals seeking to engage, support, and retain adult learners in varied online educational settings.

Target Audience

The target audience for this text ranges from higher education leaders, professors, course instructors, advisors, curriculum developers, instructional designers, lifelong learning app developers, and student support services. Anyone serving adult online learners in either mobile or traditionally formatted online learning programs would benefit from this forward-thinking book. Additionally, this edited volume could be used as a textbook for courses in higher education leadership, online education, adult learning, inclusive education, or instructional design.

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before September 28, 2022, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by October 12, 2022 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters are expected to be submitted by December 11, 2022, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Motivation and Momentum in Adult Online Education. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-blind peer review editorial process.
