Introduction

The nature of money is evolving and there is a general consensus that central bank digital currencies will be the future of fiat money or central bank money. A central bank digital currency is the digital equivalent of fiat money or physical currency. Many central banks have began to research about CBDC while other central banks plan to issue a central bank digital currency in the future. This has led to debates about the best use case of CBDC, the benefits of CBDC and the risks associated with issuing a CBDC. Despite the debates, there is little knowledge about how CBDC is developing in different regions such as in Oceania, Australia, Africa and South America.
