Abstract

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot gaining popularity in education. Educators have concerns about its impact. Chatbots are emerging in various sectors, including education and STEM. However, their use as a pedagogical tool is unclear. ChatGPT provides direct answers to difficult questions, raising concerns about essays and research production in universities. Pedagogical changes will be needed to adapt to ChatGPT. This chapter reviews ChatGPT's applications in higher education, highlighting challenges, risks, and ethical considerations. The chapter emphasizes the need for further investigation and suggests using ChatGPT as a memory tool for creative learning.

The utilization of technological applications has consistently expedited the teaching-learning process within educational environments. Advancements in technology have been instrumental in reshaping the dissemination and acquisition of knowledge, ultimately elevating the educational journey for educators and students alike. Over the years, advancements in technology have transformed how knowledge is imparted and acquired, enhancing the overall educational experience for both teachers and students. Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved and improved over the recent past, finding its applications in all the fields. AI's integration into the education system has gained momentum, offering a multitude of avenues to augment the teaching-learning process in recent times. AI's increasing involvement in education, has contributed to innovative enhancements that facilitate learning and instruction. AI has been predominantly used in professional learning for hybrid and remote learning modes (Educause, 2022).

One of the primary way technologies accelerates the teaching-learning process is through the facilitation of information access. The internet and digital resources provide vast amounts of educational content and research materials, making it easier for students to explore and engage with a wide range of subjects. Moreover, teachers can access a plethora of educational tools, multimedia resources, and online platforms to enrich their teaching methods.

Technology also enables personalized learning experiences. With the aid of educational software, learning management systems, and adaptive learning platforms, educators can tailor lessons and assignments to meet individual students' needs and learning styles. This personalized approach fosters better comprehension and engagement, allowing students to progress at their own pace.

Collaborative learning has also been significantly amplified by technology. Virtual classrooms, video conferencing tools, and online discussion forums enable seamless communication and interaction among students and educators, irrespective of geographical barriers. These technologies offer interactive and engaging simulations, making complex subjects more comprehensible and enhancing experiential learning. The integration of technology in education has expedited the sharing of knowledge, improved instructional strategies, and diversified learning experiences. As technology continues to evolve, educators and institutions need to stay abreast of new advancements to harness their full potential in optimizing the teaching-learning process for the benefit of all learners.

Technology is often learned quicker by students when compared to teachers and academic staff, they adopt to the new technology real time through social media. The introduction of the trending technology ChatGPT is not unfamiliar to the education system; however, its rapid dissemination within the market has exceeded expectations. ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, had been released to the public on November 30, 2022, by a company called OpenAI. A chatbot is a computer program intended to reproduce discussion with human clients, particularly over the Web (Lord, 2022). ChatGPT has found its way into students’ learning process and has become a staple in students' search requirements within the classroom. It belongs to the family of language models known as GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). A generative model is a kind of model that creates new information, rather than just characterizing or foreseeing in light of data information (Pavlik, 2023).

Curriculum: The curriculum encompasses various components, including textbooks, lesson plans, assessments, and resources, all organized in a coherent and sequential manner.
