Thousands Die in 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Turkey and Syria

By IGI Global on Feb 22, 2023
Collapsed buildings A deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on February 6th, 2023, leaving behind massive destruction and over 35,000 deaths. Thousands of survivors spent days waiting to be rescued from what has been deemed the “biggest disaster of the 21st century." Thousands of emergency personnel from Turkey and abroad were deployed to provide aid and assist in search and rescue efforts.
On February 20th, after the initial deadly earthquake, the region was hit with a 6.3-magnitude aftershock tremor, killing at least six people and injuring hundreds more. Understanding the need for organization in this time of crisis, we want to highlight the work of researchers who have explored how digital services can aid communication and efficiency for disaster relief and recovery.
Prof. Lídia Oliveira’s two decades of experience in researching the implications of information technology on individuals, groups, and organizations, have been put into a key reference source, Digital Services in Crisis, Disaster, and Emergency Situations (ISBN: 9781799867050) published by IGI Global. The book provides critical research on how digital technologies are utilized as a communication tool during crisis, disaster, and emergency situations.

Despite increasing acceptance and legalization of cannabis in some US states, disparities persist in federal marijuana laws, exacerbated by the Biden administration's classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug. This inconsistency leads to unfair penalties in the criminal justice system, where individuals in legal states can still face federal prosecution.
