What is Simulation Optimization

A computational technique that applies the simulation of a real system, based on a mathematical model, integrated with an optimization algorithm. This process works applies recursive iterations between the computational simulation and the optimization algorithm directly connecting inputs and outputs.

A solver using simulation optimization can search through thousands of ways to allocate resources and, for each one, through thousands of possible future outcomes, and seek the best set of choices. The solution gives a much better picture of the decisions we should make, given what we know for sure and the range of outcomes for factors that we don’t know for sure.
