In effort to support the advancement of library technologies and services, IGI Global has implemented the Librarian Profile Series as part of our Library Technology Innovation Program. This series features the profiles of today's leaders and specialists in knowledge management advancement and technologies. For this edition, we are proud to spotlight Ms. Lia Hemphill, Director of Collection Development at Nova Southeastern University.

How do you consider yourself a technological innovator?

I work closely with our technical services and systems staff to implement changes in cataloging and databases. The catalog is an intrical part of the library and the key inventory control of all the material. The maintenance of the catalog involves all members of the staff. Working with systems is important to maintain the information of library offerings delivered to the users. This includes the adding and deleting of databases and database descriptions. No one works in a vacuum, and the library team works like a well-greased wheel.

What areas of technological innovation do you consider the most exciting?

Recently, I was asked my opinion of streaming video. This is a new era in providing video to the classroom. Libraries need to work with vendors to properly implement this new technology, and so that no one fails in copyright infringements.

What technology-related projects do you see librarians implementing in the future?

Librarians will be using SKYPE and other face-to-face applications to work with students and faculty. As more information becomes available in the electronic format, the library needs to position itself as the primary source of navigation just like a GPS.

What advice would you share with a librarian looking to become a leader in supporting technology advancements?

Know the business community and keep up with who are the Presidents and Vice Presidents. Watch the pricing models and how they are changing. Read what the vendors are working on and do not be afraid to offer your opinion.



IGI Global Profiles Ms. Lia Hemphill, Director Of Collection Development At Nova Southeastern UniversityMs. Lia Hemphill is a Member of Advisory Board at Xrefer Ltd and recently retired as head of collection development for Nova Southeastern University. She received a master's degree from Simmons College, School of Library and Information Sciences, and an MBA from Nova University. She has worked in libraries for over 25 years in a variety of capacities, including as a solo librarian for a manufacturer, an acquisitions and serials librarian for a law school and in acquisitions and serials for an academic library. During all of these posts, she did reference work, attended professional conferences and wrote book reviews.
