China and Metadata: History and Future Predictions

By IGI Global on Oct 13, 2016
Adaptation and Localization: Metadata Research and Development for Chinese Digital Resources As library users, we often fail to realize the importance of the specialized players and tools working behind the scenes. An integral unit in the knowledge-sharing digitized world, metadata is one of these unsung heroes.

In the 1980s, a new research project aimed at developing Chinese metadata standards, schemes, and specifications began to be developed, with an initial launch in 1997. Since then, many metadata-related projects have been conducted and completed. The article, "Adaptation and Localization: Metadata Research and Development for Chinese Digital Resources" summarizes the achievements of these projects, and introduces Chinese metadata standards, schemes, and specifications in digital libraries, archives management, and digital resources management in some specific domains. This research introduces a series of CDLS (Chinese Digital Library Standards) metadata standards based on Dublin Core (DC), the metadata standard for Chinese administrative electronic records, and gives an overview of Chinese metadata standards for digital resources in various specific domains. Written by Chinese scholars Yuelin Li (Nankai University, China), Xue Xiao (Nankai University, China), Xiangjun Feng (Nankai University, China) and Hui Yan (Nankai University, China), this paper attempts to draw a holistic picture of ongoing metadata research and development in China.
