IGI Global Hosts Symposium on Ethical Gaming

By IGI Global on May 9, 2011
IGI Global is excited to announce its upcoming symposium for May 2011. Dr. Karen Schrier, a recent graduate of Columbia University, will be presenting a symposium entitled "Can Games Support Ethical Thinking?" on May 24th 2011. In this symposium, Dr. Schrier will discuss current research from her new book, Designing Games for Ethics: Models,Techniques and Frameworks, and highlight the experiences of researchers and practitioners who are investigating and designing games in this growing, interdisciplinary field. She will share case studies and stories from experiences in designing and researching games and evaluate possible methodologies and challenges in assessing ethics in games. This symposium is appropriate for educators, researchers, policymakers, designers, journalists, and game players interested in learning more about the exciting intersection of games and ethics.

Describing the subjects to be covered in her upcoming symposium, Dr. Schrier says:

"When told of the topic, ‘ethics and games,' many people immediately think of ‘controversial' games such as the Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty series. However, it may be more useful to understand why these games are so controversial (and why others are not), to evaluate the ethics of game play and game interactions, and to examine whether games can support ethical thinking – and not to decide whether games are inherently good or bad. In other words, what are the potentials and limits for expressing and experimenting with ethics and values through games? What are the ethics of game creation and promotion? How should games be better designed for supporting character development or ethical reasoning?"

For teachers and professors who are interested in the ethics of gaming or are considering the use of gaming to enhance classroom learning, Dr. Schrier's symposium will be a valuable resource. On June 21st, IGI Global will be hosting Dr. Emmanuel Udoh from the Indiana Institute of Technology, who will be presenting a symposium entitled "Adoption of Grid and Cloud Computing Technology." Dr. Udoh will be discussing grid computing and cloud computing as its successor, as well as types of clouds and the impact they are having on adoption in the public and private sectors. Dr. Udoh is the editor of an upcoming IGI Global book, Cloud, Grid and High Performance Computing: Emerging Applications, scheduled to be released this summer.
