Prof. Clarke Answers Our Questions

What was the driving force or motivation for starting this book project?

Prof. Clarke: The motivation for starting this book project began with a conversation between Dr. Moffett and me. I was sharing with him a recent experience I had, and he made reference to the experience being an example of the Queen Bee Syndrome. It was interesting to hear his views as a man who had witnessed this behavior. We both felt this conversation needed to be shared with a larger audience because it is something that happens quite often but is not discussed.
What specific problems does the book address?

Prof. Clarke: The book addresses the Queen Bee Syndrome. That is women in leadership positions harm their junior female colleagues (in a variety of ways) because they fear the junior colleague will somehow take their position.

How unique is this book within its topic coverage?

Prof. Clarke: This book is very unique in that the Queen Bee Syndrome was introduced 15 years ago but it has not been discussed in this manner in academia.

What do you think about publishing this book change about this field of study?

Prof. Clarke: It is the hope that this book will allow our colleagues in the academy to begin to have honest conversations about what can be done to eliminate the Queen Bee Syndrome from occurring in the workplace.

How long have you been working in a related field to the topic coverage?

Prof. Clarke: I have worked in the education field for 20 years. Dr. Moffett has spent over 30 years in education. He entered the profession as a bus driver and is now a tenured full professor.

How does your professional background support your ability to be an authority on this book's coverage?

Prof. Clarke: The Co-Editor’s professional background as members of the academy allow us to be authorities on this book’s coverages because we have either experienced, witnessed or stood against the Queen Bee Syndrome in the workplace.

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
