Tech and Ethics: The Decline of Morality in the Digital Age

By IGI Global on Mar 27, 2013
Tech and Ethics: The Decline of Morality in the Digital AgeTechnology changes everything around us on a daily basis. It changes the homes we live in, cars we drive, and work we do. But has our technological society also changed our morality? Philosophers and religious scholars have long debated over which morals are the most ethical, but it is apparent that changes in society have a direct impact on human morality. Stan Mack's ehow.com article, “The Effects of Technology on Moral Development,” addresses key factors that influence behavior in the use of information technology.

Mack notes that online spaces are constantly changing, creating new and unfamiliar environments. Rules regarding privacy and property are not always applicable. Internet users have a certain anonymity which makes it difficult to know identifiable information, or to pinpoint harassment. There is an element of remoteness from feedback or harm with distance technology, with the absence of face-to-face communication and physical presence.

In the chapter “The Significance of the Ethics of Respect”, author Josep M. Esquirol states: “This is the age of technology when techno-scientific power is shaping society, transforming our habitat and bodies. Genetic engineering, new sources of energy, the media revolution and the virtual world of computers, environmental deterioration, and the expansion of the cyber-world… Such issues are the subject of conversations, publications, essays and disputes between experts. Technology shapes not only our lives but also our vision of life. The ethics of respect seeks to establish a dialogue with this vision of life.”

Part of the InfoSci®-Books Database, a collection of over 2,000 scholarly books on cutting-edge research, the IGI Global book Ethical Impact of Technological Advancements and Applications in Society outlines how important it is that society retains its ethics regarding technology. Exploring ethical challenges of innovations, this resource provides an analysis of designs, developments, impacts, policies, theories, and methodologies related to ethical aspects of technology in society.

Despite increasing acceptance and legalization of cannabis in some US states, disparities persist in federal marijuana laws, exacerbated by the Biden administration's classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug. This inconsistency leads to unfair penalties in the criminal justice system, where individuals in legal states can still face federal prosecution.
