How to Become the Biggest Library in the World

By IGI Global on Jun 25, 2010
Cambridge University Library recently announced that it wants to become the digital library for the world, making more than seven million books available online. Anne Jarvis, a librarian at the university, says they want to make the library more "accessible to anyone with an internet connection. At the click of a mouse, students and scholars will be able to plunge into the worlds of Mediterranean Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities of the 11 century or into the minds of Isaac Newton and his contemporaries." ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/cambridgeshire/10241488.stm) Libraries across the globe are exploring the capabilities of digital library systems. Although some remain hesitant, a digital revolution advocating the idea of greater access to information is emerging. Charles Henry, president of the Council on Library and Information Resources stated, "Today's digital commons … is often a contested zone where bounded and unbounded impulses compete: intellectual property laws, copyright, and the commodification of information can struggle with open access, file sharing, social networks, and a much more free-form, nonhierarchical, even chaotic participation in the creation and distribution of knowledge. The unbounded features of the new digital knowledge commons have resulted in the reconceptualization of academic libraries and, by extension, of the modern university." International Journal of Digital Library Systems

Aligning with the interests of these modern universities, IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, is fulfilling the need for research covering all aspects of library information science and technology. The publisher recently introduced the International Journal of Digital Library Systems (IJDLS) (Editor-in-chief Chia-Hung Wei, Ching Yun University, Taiwan) covers the rapid acceleration of multimedia technology use in libraries across the globe. Through advanced research in multimedia storage and retrieval, this journal provides academicians, scientists, librarians, practitioners, and engineers with the latest findings and innovative technology solutions in digital library research, design, and applications.

IJDLS is released quarterly and covers a variety of issues such as: architecture of digital library systems, human-computer interface design, metadata creating and management, ontology and semantic interoperability, systems and algorithms for data preservation amongst many others. For more information including details on subscriptions and submissions, and a free sample issue of the journal, visit www.igi-global.com/ijdls.
