Competition in the Workplace: Is it Healthy or Harmful?

By IGI Global on Dec 22, 2016
Competition in the Workplace: Is it Healthy or Harmful? Competition in the workplace can be destructive to employees- reducing morale, focus, and productivity, also potentially creating bitterness and resentment among colleagues. But establishing levels of healthy competition can be positive, boosting staff incentive and driving innovation.

In business management, it is often hard for those in positions of authority to concoct the right mix of competition and cooperation. In 1913, the Sealshipt Oyster System coined the term “co-opetition” to describe the idea of cooperative competition, or cooperating with competitors. The term was rarely used again until the 1980s, when Raymond Noorda reintroduced the concept to characterize Novell's progressive business strategy. Since 1996, the concept had become more familiar due to studies presented by Brandenburger and Nalebuff (1996) and several other books focused on coopetition.

Written by Dr. Rauno Rusko of the University of Lapland, Finland, "Coopetition for Organizations" investigates the scientific status of the idea of coopetition, and how to best apply this idea to modern business management practice. This research is featured in the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Third Edition, a 10-volume compilation of authoritative, research-based articles contributed by thousands of researchers and experts from all over the world. This discipline-defining encyclopedia will serve research needs in numerous fields that are affected by the rapid pace and substantial impact of technological change. With an emphasis on modern issues and the presentation of potential opportunities, prospective solutions, and future directions in the field, it is a relevant and essential addition to any academic library’s reference collection.
