Hear From the Expert Behind the International Journal of Strategic Engineering (IJoSE):

Professor Amin Hosseinian-Far on Leading an Open Access Journal

By IGI Global on May 11, 2023

Taking on the title of Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of an academic journal is never an easy task. There is a lot of responsibility and time that goes into this position. We reached out to Professor Amin Hosseinian-Far (University of Northampton, UK) who is the EiC of International Journal of Strategic Engineering (IJoSE) to hear his thoughts, outlook, and aim for leading an open access journal.
Professor Hosseinian-Far's journal, International Journal of Strategic Engineering, outlines and intends to resolve a variety of engineering problems from the strategic point of view. This journal covers a wide range of theories, techniques, concepts, frameworks and applied case studies related to key strategic systems development, maintenance and modeling.
International Journal of Strategic Engineering was established in 2018 as a hybrid journal and converted to a gold open access journal on January 1st, 2023.
What inspired you to become the Editor-in-Chief of the IGI Global journal IJoSE?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: As an Editor, I get the opportunity to keep myself up to date with the latest developments in the field. It also allows me to support researchers to improve their research papers for publication.
To you, what are the most important attributes of your journal? What sets your journal apart from others?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: International Journal of Strategic Engineering (IJoSE) provides a platform for dissemination of multidisciplinary research. The journal targets a variety of audiences including but not limited to academics, policy makers, and practitioners.
What does it mean for you to lead an open access journal where all new published content will be freely available worldwide?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: Leading an open access journal is a matter of great pride and responsibility. As the EIC of an open access journal, it is my responsibility to ensure that the highest standards of quality and rigor are maintained in the peer review process and in the selection of papers for publication. This includes ensuring that our authors receive constructive feedback and support to improve the quality of their research and that our readers have access to papers that are valuable contributions to the field.

Who will benefit from the open access research within International Journal of Strategic Engineering?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: Open access research has broader reach and particularly benefits policymakers, practitioners, and anyone who does not have access to certain library subscriptions. Open access research within IJoSE will also be beneficial for authors, as their research papers will be accessible to a larger number of readers.
What is your outlook on Open Access research in the future as more mandates are put in place and more publications take up the open access model of publishing?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: I believe open access is beneficial to research, researchers, citizens, and all pertinent stakeholders. The open access mandate as a policy is now extensively adopted by research institutions, and funders globally.
Are there any trending/niche research areas that you are looking for in the articles submitted to your journal? What are some future directions for your research?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: Although Systems Thinking is not necessarily a new field, application of its techniques is very much required to ensure that scientific problem solving is considerate of the complexities, systemic feedback, and dynamic risks involved. Therefore, I would welcome research that incorporates holistic approaches of systems sciences for solving contemporary engineering problems.
What advice do you have for researchers seeking to publish academic research in this field?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: Proactive and strategic engineering should incorporate the longer-term impact of the innovation or the solution put forward. Historically, there have been many instances of innovation failure where the innovation and/or solution had very limited scope and were not thoughtful of the wider and often unintended consequences.
How would you suggest researchers utilize the content from this journal that will become freely accessible?
Professor Hosseinian-Far: The freely accessible contents will enable many researchers, graduate students, practitioners, and policymakers to be able to gain access to the latest developments in the field. The contents will be vital for future research, personal development, and informing practices and/or interventions.
Thank you to Professor Hosseinian-Far for his dedication and commitment to keeping his journal to the highest quality, as well as sharing his insights as an EiC. The International Journal of Strategic Engineering and all IGI Global journals are currently seeking submissions.
