Raising Discoverability

How to Best Promote Your Work After Publication

By Mikaela Felty on Feb 28, 2022
Completing an academic reference book is a major accomplishment and milestone in a researcher’s career. It is hoped that at the official release of the book, the Editor or Author finally gets the opportunity to see their hard work rewarded as other researchers and scholars start implementing the book into their own research. However, the publication process does not end at the official release of a book. In order for a reference book to receive the attention that it deserves, it is essential that the editor(s) or author(s) of the project promote their book and research.

Discoverability Check List
The below check list comprises an essential guide for researchers looking to maximize their impact and reach.
  • Recommend The Publication to Your Library

To recommend your recently published work to your institution’s library, you can complete the recommendation form specific to the book or journal the content is published within. You can also put a representative from our Author Relations Team in direct contact with your institution’s library and note your interest for your institution to acquire your title so that it becomes available to faculty, students, and staff in support of their research needs.

Another way that your research can be added to your institution’s library is to recommend IGI Global e-Collections to your library. As an IGI Global contributor, this has numerous benefits to you as any future works you publish with us will be made available to your library through the e-collections.

  • Recommend the Publication to Your Colleagues and Students

Upon publication, editors and authors at IGI Global receive an exclusive contributor discount code. You may share this code with your colleagues and students who may wish to acquire your publication or any other IGI Global Publication on our Online Bookstore. This discount is applied during step two of the checkout process in the shopping cart.

  • Share Your Publication’s Webpage

Update your social and professional networks with direct links to your book’s webpage to notify them when your title is available for pre-order, scheduled for release, and any other notable event. By doing this, you can encourage your network to share news about your publications, including bibliographic information, table of contents, and special promotions. For social media use, be sure to tag us @IGIGlobal in your posts!

  • orcid logoCreate/Connect Your ORCID iD

This will increase the discoverability of your research and enables you to manage your research activities in one central location.

  • Adopt Your Publication into a Course

Include your publication in your course syllabus or as a supplemental reading to provide your students with access to your valuable research. A representative from our Author Relations Team can also assist you in ensuring your title is widely accessible for use in courses.

  • Gain Your Institution’s Support

Many institutions have a marketing department or public relations team. You can ask for their support in spreading the word about your publication. Institutions typically see this as a point of pride that one of their faculty members has added high-quality research into the body of knowledge.

  • Award Applications and Opportunities

If there are any applicable awards for your title, our Author Relations Team will happily support your application. Additionally, if your publication wins an award, we will include it on the book’s or journal’s webpage and share the news with our networks.

  • Suggest Book Reviewers (For Book Editors/Authors)

As the expert in your field, you are the best person to reach out to your network of qualified individuals and ask them to provide a statement on the impact of your work. Once you have arranged parties interested in reviewing your released publication, you can put them in contact with a representative from our Author Relations Team and they can arrange review access. We are able to provide perpetual access to the electronic version of the title upon their completion of the review.

Quick Guide to Research Sharing & Copyright
CC BY 4.0 It is important to note the license that your work was published under, and the sharing capabilities or limitations wrought by that license. For instance, work published under the traditional publishing model (standard access), where the copyright of the work transfers to the publisher, does have some limited sharing capabilities under IGI Global’s Fair Use Policy. Open Access (OA) content published with the CC BY 4.0 license, wherein the copyright remains with the author of the work, allows substantially more options and flexibility. The below chart provides a quick overview of where and how you may share
your work:
Traditional Publishing Model
(Standard Access) (Fair Use Policy)
Open Access Publishing

Can republish the chapter in a future book publication.
Note: Under the Fair Use Policy, authors may only use the final typeset PDF version of their manuscript. Under Open Access (OA), authors may use the formally accepted and planned for publication version or the final typeset PDF version for sharing purposes. However, authors are asked to link back to the published version on IGI Global’s website and whenever possible, the final published version of the manuscript should overwrite any pre-publication posting.

While open access allows for free and immediate access to published research without paywalls or restrictions, the process of publishing open access work incurs certain costs.
