Community Over Commercialization

Celebrating International Open Access Week 2023

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Oct 25, 2023
International Open Access Week 2023 carries the theme "Community Over Commercialization," putting a spotlight on the importance of fostering collaborative, inclusive, and community-driven approaches in the realm of open access publishing.
The theme of "Community Over Commercialization" underscores the idea that open access should prioritize the interests of the academic and research communities rather than profit-driven motives. It emphasizes the need to build strong and sustainable networks of researchers, authors, librarians, institutions, and publishers who share a common commitment to advancement for all.
IGI Global’s Commitment to Open Access
With IGI Global’s rapid two-year transformation of their entire journal collection (nearly 200 journals) to gold open access, they have gone against the grain by prioritizing the needs of the research community over profitability. As an open access publisher of both journals and books, IGI Global provides collaboration and inclusivity through their open access platform for researchers worldwide to freely share their work, engage in constructive peer review processes, and connect with a global audience. As all open access content is immediately and freely available to everyone, it then boosts discoverability, citation impact, and more for the research community.
IGI Global’s Open Access Research
IGI Global's Open Access program serves as an example of how publishers can contribute to the theme of "Community Over Commercialization." By actively participating in discussions and other initiatives during the week, IGI Global encourages education on the open access movement as a means of strengthening scholarly communities, promoting collaboration, and emphasizing the shared values that underline open access publishing.
Features of the Open Access Program
Researchers can take advantage of numerous benefits and opportunities of publishing under open access with IGI Global:
  • CC BY license applied to all open access content.

  • Compliance with institution, funding, and government mandates.
  • Open access agreements with leading research libraries.
  • Applicable for indexing by prominent indices including Web of Science and Scopus.
  • 2-3 times more likely to be read; 89% higher download rates; and 47% more likely to be cited than non-open access research.
IGI Global’s Open Access Journal Program
By 2023, IGI Global has converted its entire collection of nearly 200 open access journals to Gold or Platinum open access models, making IGI Global the third largest full open access journal publisher. With affordable Article Processing Charges (APCs) in-line and in many cases far below the industry average, IGI Global journals are highly-indexed and representative of disciplines within Business & Management, Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM), and Education.
IGI Global’s Open Access Book Program
IGI Global offers Hybrid, Gold, and Platinum open access publishing models for every book format. IGI Global books have the ability to be published in as little as 6-9 months from conceptualization to print, in most cases as fast or quicker than a journal article, and far below the industry average of 2 years. IGI Global’s first gold open access publication, the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Sixth Edition (ISBN: 9781668473665), edited by Mehdi Khosrow-Pour, D.B.A., has already proven a great success with over 65 chapters currently published and electronically available for free. IGI Global gold open access books follow a continuous publication frequency, allowing chapters to be published immediately following the editor’s formal acceptance.

IGI Global’s Retrospective Open Access Program
Authors who published their research under a traditional, non-open access model in the past with IGI Global can still benefit from open access offerings! To support authors who have already published and would like to convert their work to open access, IGI Global offers a Retrospective Open Access Program that allows books, chapters, and articles previously published under a non-open access model to be converted to open access at a discounted rate. A CC-BY license is applied to the work with the copyright transferring back to the author(s) of the work.
Retrospectively opening published research increases citation rates and indexing potential of the paper as well as attributes to greater discoverability, networking capabilities, and sharing power for authors and editors.
