Providing Computers to Schools in Kenya

Bridging the Digital Divide in Educational Technologies

Every year, new advances in technology are constantly being updated and improved. While students in one area of the world are able to enhance their learning experiences by using up-to-date computer software, students in other parts of the world do not have the opportunity to use computers at all.

In a recent BBC News Report, the British council and Microsoft have collaborated to provide a “Digital Hub” where students in Kenya can use computers. The Digital Hub will provide nearly one hundred schools in Kenya with access to computers. Students will be able to use the computers for online learning, writing instruction, and to connect with teachers and students around the globe.

Across the world, there is a digital divide in education systems. This divide creates unequal opportunities for learning outcomes in schools. In order to create more equal opportunities for educational learning in schools, there is a need to bridge the gap in the digital divide. The IGI Global chapter, "International Collaboration in Distance Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: Trends, Trials and Tomorrow’s Thrusts", provides similar comparisons for improving educational outcomes in African education systems.

Written by research professionals Gbolagade Adekanmbi and Bopelo Boitshwarelo of the University of Botswana, this chapter focuses on initiatives for online learning in African schools. Their efforts are focused on how schools in African can utilize technology for advancing and improving educational outcomes.

“The thesis of this paper is that international collaboration plays a major role in the development of distance education in sub-Saharan Africa and can influence, among others, the desire for ICT integration in distance education practices on the continent”.

Featured in the IGI Global title, Cases on Cultural Implications and Considerations in Online Learning, edited by Andrea Edmundson of eWorld Learning, USA, this book provides numerous ways to engage learners across cultures by using online learning that accommodates cultural differences and preferences. This casebook helps online educators understand what cultural expectations their students have before they create online programs and tailor their instructional designs for multicultural and international learners.
