Handbook of Research on Computerized Occlusal Analysis Technology Applications in Dental MedicineApril 22, 2015, Hershey, PA – Tekscan, Inc., a Boston, MA, company specializing in pressure mapping, force measurement, and tactile sensors, recently held an event to honor dentist and author Dr. Robert Kerstein, editor of the IGI Global publication Handbook of Research on Computerized Occlusal Analysis Technology Applications in Dental Medicine, a text featuring 17 international contributors and their clinical cases illustrating T-Scan® technology, dentistry’s only digital occlusal analysis system. The product allows dentists to analyze the bite forces across the patient’s dentition, informing the dentist of occlusal abnormalities. Dr. Kerstein has been working with the product since its inception in 1984, and his career-long compilation of history and research surrounding the product has taken shape in the form of a clinical textbook.

Tekscan awarded Dr. Kerstein with a commemorative plaque for his commendable contributions to the field of occlusal technology. Dr. Kerstein then shared some of his experiences regarding the book and its contributors, and engaged in an informal Q&A session, followed by a celebratory dinner with Tekscan's senior management team.

“I wrote this book to illustrate to modern Dental Medicine, the scope and breadth that the field of Computerized Occlusal Analysis has grown into since the T-Scan’s inception in 1984. The book describes how the T-Scan has brought occlusal force and timing measurement to a significant portion of daily dental practice that, until the development of the T-Scan, had always been subjectively interpreted by the clinician,” said Dr. Kerstein. “This book details every available use that the T-Scan technology has in Dental Medicine, and therefore can educate many dentists, researchers, and academicians on the benefits that Computerized Occlusal Analysis offers both patients and clinicians.”

Dr. Thomas Coleman, author of the chapter “Detecting and Quantifying Cervical Dentin Hypersensitivity Using Air Indexing Combined with the T-Scan System”, praised Dr. Kerstein's expertise: “Robert is a long-term personal friend and professional colleague with whom much information has been exchanged to our mutual benefit since the mid- ‘90s. His expertise/interest with T- Scan technology and willingness to educate me with this digital technology without restraint is the mark of his topic mastery.” Another contributor, Dr. Teresa Sierpinska of Poland who authored the chapter, “The Management of Advanced Tooth Wear Using the T-Scan/BioEMG Synchronization Module,” shared the sentiment. “Dr. Kerstein is the best expert in the field of computerized occlusal analysis,” she said. “I have known him for about ten years and every time he was very helpful in solving any problems that appeared during registration and interpretation of the data. I am not an English native speaker, so my language is not as fluent as it is necessary in scientific book writing. Dr. Kerstein adjusted all the material to the proper language and consulted me on all the pictures that appeared in the chapter prepared.”

In February, Tekscan began a webinar series featuring the book contributors of the Handbook of Research on Computerized Occlusal Analysis Technology Applications in Dental Medicine. For the first episode, Dr. Sarah Qadeer presented her chapter "The Limitations of Traditional Non-Digital Occlusal Indicators When Compared to the T-Scan Computerized Occlusal Analysis Technology". More authors are engaged to present their chapters in the series this summer. Dr. Kerstein will be referencing his book at speaking engagements all over the globe throughout 2015.
