Are Robots taking Over? A Future Perspective of our Robotic Society

By IGI Global on Feb 3, 2016
IGI Global Editor Travels To Myanmar Modern robots are engineered with the capacity to perceive and interpret human voice variation, facial expressions, and even walking patterns. The incredible technologies designed to record and process this information have revolutionized the future of social robots. Forbes recently published an article on Nadine, the receptionist robot, who was cloned in the image of her creator, Professor Nadia Thalmann.

"Nadine can recognize the people she has met, remember what they have said before and, researchers claim, she can be happy or sad," writes Forbes contributor Federico Guerrini in The Rise of Social Robots. Nadine was unveiled at the end of December by the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Like Siri or Cortana, she could become a personal assistant in offices and homes or be used as a social companion for the young and the elderly.

Robots have had particular success assisting in the area of healthcare. The company Blue Ocean Robotics conducted recent studies on interaction between the Telanoid R1 robot with the elderly, specifically those suffering from dementia. Interaction with the robot encouraged active communication in the elderly with mild dementia, and encouraged physical interaction among those with severe dementia. Most care facilities suffer from a shortage of workers which results in a lack of communication with residents. Often family and relatives cannot be present at a care home as much as they want. A care home personnel can leave a resident with Telenoid, through which the relatives of a resident will communicate with him. Telenoid has a minimalistic design and therefore can represent any human of any age.

The field of robotics is becoming more and more sophisticated every day as new developments in artificial intelligence, synthetic emotions, image processing, and cognitive architecture emerge. As technology continues to develop, the potential for socially aware and interactive robots in the mainstream becomes a reality.

The IGI Global video lecture, "Developing Socially Interactive Robots" presents a research-based discussion on the newest generation of robotics to include humanoid robots and social and assistive robots developed to directly interact with the human population. Highlighting a variety of topics relating to emerging intelligent technologies, current applications for social robots as well as standardization and ethics issues, this video lecture is designed for educational use by researchers, graduate-level students, ethicists, and engineers interested in learning about next-generation robotic technologies and applications.
