Space Tourism: A New Industry

Commerce in Space: Infrastructures, Technologies, and Applications The idea of space tourism is still a relatively new concept to the majority of the population, with tickets starting at 250K for a flight lasting about 2 and half hours. But in the future, vacations into space might actually be more attainable.

According to reports from CNN, if the FAA gives it the go-ahead, Virgin Galactic is ready to launch the industry of space tourism.

Driven by founder Sir Richard Branson, an English business magnate and investor, Virgin Galactic plans to provide suborbital spaceflights to space tourists, launches for space science missions, and orbital launches of small satellites.

More than 600 people have signed up to pay the quarter million dollars to secure their journeys into space. And the travelers won't be simply passengers. The entire experience will require three days of training and health testing. They participate as 'crew members', engaged in the process of space travel.

Branson sees it as the start of a major industry. "We'll start with giving people a taste of space, then we'll send people into orbital flight. We'll start building hotels in space." When asked about the options for those not able to spend $250,000 to defy gravity, he continues: "Initially, it's very much the wealthiest who are going to use it. But through these wealthy people being willing to be pioneers, I think millions of people will one day have the chance to go to space."

"It's the start of a new space race. It's not been easy. It's taken us five years more than we thought it would take but finally they've pulled it off."

That is, if the FAA gives Galactic the green light.
